Resident Abuse and Exploitation: Prevention and Protection
Caring for residents means recognizing and preventing all forms of abuse.
This training program explains what abuse is, distinguishes types of abuse—from obvious to subtle, and identifies resident and facility risk factors that may increase likelihood of abuse. It explores why residents often refuse to report abuse, outlines how to help caregivers manage stress to prevent instances of abuse, and equips caregivers to recognize signs of abuse from co-workers or visitors.
The DVD documents 6 categories of abuse (with specific warning signs):
- Verbal/mental
- Physical
- Sexual
- Financial
- Involuntary seclusion
- Neglect/abandonment
Caregivers will learn how to document, report, and respond to suspected instances of abuse. The film also uses several “interaction vignettes” to pinpoint whether certain situations should be deemed abusive or not. Should be required viewing for all staff.
