More Than Words!  Finding New Avenues of Expression for Person Living with Dementia (Reframing Perceptions of Dementia)

The Presentation

Using evocative scenes from over 15 videos, this workshop compares how we used to think about Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to how we are learning to see them today – and the extreme difference this new awareness makes in the lives of those who have a dementia disability, and for those who care for them.

This dynamic presentation will reach your audience at an emotive level, both challenging and changing their perceptions of dementia – and of what persons with dementia are able to be and do if given the right atmosphere and the right tools of expression.

Central to this presentation is the concept of “belonging” – being connected – which is crucial both to one’s understanding of dementia, and to preserving the well-being of persons who are living with it.

The presentation uses several video clips to show firsthand how thinking differently about dementia will lead to new ways of enriching the lives of those who have a dementia disability.  Mr. Vanden Bosch uses examples of music, painting, dance, and theatre to show how anyone can create new avenues for persons with dementia to communicate and remain connected with others, their environment, and themselves.

Participants Comments:

“Inspiring! Cutting Edge! Wow! Best presentation ever! I could have listened all day. My programs will always use music after that! He was wonderful!”

“The videos were excellent, and how the speaker put is presentation and videos together was fantastic!  At points, in some of the clips, I found myself in tears!”
-Comments from the Illinois Activity Professionals Association Conference

“It was one of the most insightful, moving, person-centered keynotes I have heard in a long time. Jim really gets it when it comes to caring for elders.”
– Deb Greiner, DeKalb, IL

Thoughts and Reflections on the Time I Spent Living as a “Resident” in a Dementia Unit

The Presentation

This presentation explores how our deeply ingrained and commonly accepted notions of “caregiving” can affect the quality of living for persons who need daily support in a long term care setting.  Changing our perceptions of caregiving might then also help us change the care setting from a work place to a living place, and shift us away from the idea of doing for and move us toward the deeper and richer work of enabling the individual who needs our assistance.

As part of this exploration, Jim shares his thoughts and reflections on the time he spent living as a “resident” in a dementia unit, and how this experience helped him understand in a deeper way what is needed to carry out living-centered support for persons who are living with a cognitive disability.  Short video clips also help illustrate the core issues involved in providing this kind of support.

Exploring The Nursing Home of the Future

The Presentation

Ask anyone about being placed in a nursing home and they will most likely shudder and say, “I really don’t want to end up there.”  In spite of this widespread aversion, most skilled care facilities have continued to be designed and run in the same manner for over 50 years!  Through the use of several video clips, this workshop takes a look at what is now finally being done to change the core of long-term care culture
